To her surprise, being snuggled up next to her husband while the ship ploughed on through the storm proved very conducive to taking a nap. By the time she woke up with a start, the room had grown dark, and the motions of the ship didn’t appear quite as extreme as earlier in the afternoon.

Kitty snapped on the bedside lamp and gave Matt’s shoulder a shake when she saw the time.

‘We need to hurry and dress for dinner. I can’t believe we slept the rest of the afternoon away.’ She slid her legs off the bed and stretched out her arms in an attempt to liven herself up.

‘Good heavens, we must have been tired.’ Matt followed her example, rising from the bed to peer out at the dark sea.

Kitty started to assemble her evening attire. ‘Is it me or does it feel calmer?’

‘I can’t see any white horses on the sea now, but the sea spray has dried on the glass, and it’s grown dark. The ship seems to be more stable though,’ he agreed.

Kitty hastily changed into one of her own evening gowns. It was one she had packed for their stay at Enderley, a dark-grey silk with a low back and silver embroidery. Matt disappeared into the bathroom to wash and shave once more before dressing in his evening clothes.

‘Shall we try and tackle Mabel and Sir Walter at dinner or just after?’ Kitty asked. ‘I had said to Mabel we might meet them for the performance by the opera singer this evening.’

‘I suppose it depends where we are seated. It also depends how they are with this stormy weather. They may not feel well enough to come out. We may be placed with the Vanhoylands again.’ Matt frowned at his reflection in the mirror on the wardrobe door as he tied his bow tie.

‘True. We shall need to be discreet. If rumours get out about not one but two murders on the ship then it will cause uproar,’ Kitty said.

‘I know and I need to go to the wireless room to send yet another telegram to Chief Inspector Greville,’ Matt said. ‘I thought the crew might have been busy during the storm, but he needs to know what has happened.’

‘I wonder what he will make of this. I wish he were here so we could discuss the case with him first-hand.’ Kitty clipped her ruby earrings onto her earlobes.

‘Although with our luck we would probably have ended up with Inspector Lewis,’ Matt reminded her with a low chuckle.

‘I think the inspector has mellowed a little since walking out with Alice’s cousin Betty.’ Kitty picked up her hairbrush.

‘Perhaps, I certainly hope so. Still, as it stands, we are alone in tackling this. Although Captain Cox appears to be a good and sensible man. No doubt he will wish to talk to us again as soon as he is able to leave the bridge.’

Matt escorted Kitty to the saloon and collected a pre-dinner sherry from the bar for them, before disappearing off to the wireless room.
